Presidential Awards Teachers Honored

An awards reception at the Governor’s Mansion on Friday, May 26, was held to honor the recipients of the 1999 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The recipients were honored by Governor Cecil H. Underwood, State Superintendent Dr. David Stewart, State Board Member Jim L. McKnight and Steve Woodruff, President of the West Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition.  

The four national award winners are: Elementary Mathematics Diana Wells, Fairview Elementary School, Marion County  

Elementary Science Linda Fonner, New Martinsville School, Wetzel County  

Secondary Mathematics Susan Hvizdos, Wheeling Park High School, Ohio County  

Secondary Science Sonya Picklesimer, Williamson High School, Mingo County.  

 

The state-level award winners are:  

Elementary Mathematics Cathie DeVito, East Dale Elementary School, Marion County  

Deborah Prezioso, Watson Elementary School, Marion County  

Elementary Science Cynthia Keeling, Jayenne Elementary School, Marion County  

Jo Ellen Snider, Long Drain School, Wetzel County  

Secondary Mathematics Deborah Clark, Summers Middle School, Summers County  

Barbara Wilson, Van Devender Junior High School, Wood County  

Secondary Science Thomas Wells, Charles Town Junior High School, Jefferson County  

Wayne Yonkelowitz, Fayetteville Middle School, Fayette County
