W.Va. Department of Education to Participate in Pandemic Flu School Closing Exercise

August 09, 2007

CHARLESTON, W.Va. _ The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) wants to make sure it’s ready should a massive flu outbreak occur in public schools across the state.

The Office of School Facilities and Office of Healthy Schools will participate in a one-day pandemic influenza school closing exercise on Friday, Aug. 10, at the Charleston Marriott from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus, which people have no immunity to, emerges and starts spreading easily from person to person around the world in a very short time causing serious illnesses and death.

The event is being funded with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The federal agency wants every state to conduct a pandemic flu exercise with county superintendents, teacher union representatives, school administrators, facilities directors, teachers, school nurses and others to plan and prepare for such a catastrophic event.
