Plan Title: "Components
HE.HS.1.1 The student will compare and contrast the components of total wellness (e.g. social, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual).
Mastery Level: The student will . . . will list the components of total wellness.
This is a small group discussion and collaborative activity. The goal of this activity is to identify the five components of health education and discover how each component is related to the others.
Introduce students to lesson by asking what "health" means to them,
and by contrast what "wellness" means to them.
2. Have students discuss what relationship exists between health and wellness.
3. Introduce students to the Dimensions of Wellness (Social, Physical, Mental, Emotional, Spiritual).
The task of each group is to consider what behaviors, characteristics and elements are a part of their assigned dimension.
Give each group a marker and station before one of the five dimensions. Instruct them to consider what behaviors, characteristics and elements are a part of their assigned dimension. Have students rotate from dimension to dimension, brainstorming each.
Wrap Up: Have students walk around the room following the last dimension to see how each dimension turned out. Tape the charts so that they overlap each other showing how each affects the others. Follow up with large group discussion about how the individual dimensions are defined, overlapped and related with the other dimensions. Conclude by asking them to arrive at their own functional definitions of health and wellness .
