WVDE Puts Out A Call For Civics Teachers

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) invites all West Virginia civics teachers to participate on the “Civics/Government and Citizenship – Every Student Every Day” Task Force. The first meeting of the Task Force will be on August 1 - 3, 2005 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston, West Virginia.  

The Task Force is an exciting initiative designed to assist West Virginia High School teachers as they implement the new Civics/ Government and Citizenship graduation requirement. The work of the Task Force will include:  

  • Review the content requirements of the Content Standards and Objectives (CSO)
  • Determine the research-based instructional strategies that best correlate with the CSOs
  • Develop a suggested curriculum map, benchmarks and formative assessments for teaching the CSOs
  • Review the current literature concerning teaching reading in the social studies content area
  • Develop a process for sharing quality lesson plans and materials
  • Develop a train the trainers model for state wide implementation
  • Review the CSOs for clarity and comprehensiveness
  • Utilize technology resources
  • Review literature of the current thinking in the field of Civics/Government and Citizenship
 

You are eligible to be a member of the Task Force if:

  1. You currently teach the new Civics graduation requirement
  2. You currently teach High School Social Studies
  3. It is possible that you will teach the new Civics graduation requirement in the future
 

Completed applications must be submitted by May 20, 2005. Thirty teachers will be selected as task force members. Teachers will be notified of the selections the first week of June. Travel cost, lodging, meals and materials are provided by the WVDE for all Task Force members.
