The Summer Food Service Program for Children, through grants-in-aid and other means, assists West Virginia and other states to initiate, maintain and expand nonprofit food service programs for children during the summer months.
The program is designed to fill the void created by summer vacation and the subsequent termination of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for those children who rely on school food service for adequate nutrition.
Any sponsor of the program is permitted to contract through a bidding procedure with a food service management company to operate its entire food service or for the preparation of meals to be served under this program. However, current regulations require that all food service management companies register with the state as a prerequisite to participating in any program within the state in 1999. Registration will be revoked if a food service management company does not follow the proper bidding procedure.
For information about the program and/or application for registration, companies should contact the
West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Child Nutrition, Building 6, Room 248, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, WV 25305-0330 or phone 304-558-2708.
The West Virginia Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are equal opportunity providers and employers.
