Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education is sponsoring the 61st Annual Transportation Conference at the Charleston Marriott from July 6 – July 9, 2003.

More than 400 bus drivers, mechanics and administrators are expected to attend the four-day conference, which will focus on strengthening professional and technical skills.

“Our record of getting students to and from school in a dependable and safe manner is impeccable thanks to our drivers, mechanics and trainers,” said State School Superintendent David Stewart. “This conference is another professional development opportunity offered to our employees so that our state continues to set the standard for the rest of the nation.”

Several transportation experts will share best practices with the attendees. Vernell “Bimbo” Coles will deliver the keynote address at 10 a.m. on July 7, 2003. Coles is a current member of the Boston Celtics and a motivational speaker.

The Employee Code of Conduct and bullying issues will also be highlighted during a 3:15 p.m. session on July 8, 2003.

“We understand that a number of bulling incidents happen on school buses so we want all of our employees to be able to identify the problem and deal with it appropriately,” said Transportation Director Wayne Clutter.

Policy 5902-Employee Code of Conduct is aimed at ensuring that all state school personnel create, encourage and maintain a safe and nurturing environment for all students and employees.
