November 20, 2002

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The West Virginia Department of Education's institutional education program at St. Mary's Correctional Center (SMCC) has received full accreditation from the Correctional Education Association (CEA), an affiliate of the American Correctional Association (ACA).

The SMCC education program met all 78 standards for a passing rate of 100 percent, an exceptional achievement. The attainment of CEA accreditation is a national recognition of excellence in the operation of educational programs in correctional institutions.

Auditors commented that the education department at SMCC was exemplary in program effectiveness and level of commitment.

The West Virginia Board of Education presented the CEA certification to the education department and facility administration during its October meeting.

In addition, the WVDE was awarded the Region 4 Workforce Investment Board Special Populations grant to assist SMCC residents with a successful re-entry to society. The grant supports a full time Transition Life Skills program coordinated with pre-post release counseling and job placement services.
