Department of Education Announces Even Start Grant Applications Now Available

May 03, 2002

The West Virginia Department of Education is announcing Requests for Proposals for county boards of education or non-profit agencies that wish to implement Even Start family literacy programs in their area. Currently, there are nine programs in operation across the state. Grants are available for up to four additional programs. Even Start is a federal program with monies granted to the state for four-year subgrants to local communities.

According to Dr. Cathy Jones, Coordinator for Early Childhood/Even Start, the requests must incorporate several components, including the key components of family literacy: adult literacy, early childhood development with an emphasis on literacy, parent and child interactive literacy activities and parenting education.

The budget requires a 10 percent match, which increases annually, by the county board of education for the first year, and collaboration between boards of education and community providers of family support, early childhood education and/or adult education.

The deadline for submitting proposals is June 13, 2002. For further information or to receive a copy of the RFP, please contact Dr. Cathy Jones at (304) 558-2691, ext. 264, or
