The purpose of the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act is to operate Adult Basic Education programs for adults 16 years of age and older and not enrolled in school. Adult Basic Education activities will assist adults to become literate and to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency; assist adults who are parents to obtain the educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children; and assist adults in the completion of the GED or high school diploma through the External Diploma Program.
Eligible applicants include county boards of education, community colleges, the state correctional agency, community-based organizations, public or private non-profit agencies, libraries, public housing authorities, agencies which have the ability to provide literacy services to adults and families; and consortiums of the named entities.
