"Creating Safe Harbors" -- Safe Schools Workshop Open for Registration

November 09, 2000

"Creating Safe Harbors" is a Workshop to provide educators and students with information and strategies which can be used, thru existing school personnel, programs, or peer teams, to enhance and ensure safety and a sense of security for all students. Violence, in any form, directed at students because of their physical or cultural characteristics or beliefs is intolerable in our schools. We have an obligation to prevent, combat, and heal the wounds from hate and discrimination and provide safety for all students through curriculum and instruction, student support services and activities, and direct interventions.

This is an opportunity for your school to be one of 20 school teams to participate in a one day workshop "Creating Safe Harbors" designed to incorporate a comprehensive approach in creating a truly safe and effective school for all students. Even though every school has a safe school plan, some of our students are still victims of on-going degrading and derogatory remarks or behaviors from their peers and even school staff. More times than not, they do not feel protected or safe. This act generally leads to some form of violence. No school is immune, but all schools can take action to eliminate it.

This workshop will incorporate three major objectives into safe school planning: 1) gain insight into and understand the ways which personal characteristics(students and staff) affect a school's physical, social, and cultural environment; 2) determine how your school can positively affect those environments; and 3) develop an attitude of acceptance and mutual respect among all students and staff for their unique attributes.

Selected school teams will receive a $200 stipend to assist with travel expenses, substitute teacher costs, and/or additional resources needed to implement a school action plan. CEU's for school nurses, counselors, or social workers and county professional development credit for school personnel are pending. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. with the program beginning at 9:00 and concluding at 3:45. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Your participation as principal and team leader is important. Act immediately to select and register your school team consisting of a minimum of two (2), but no more than four (4) members, and fax the enclosed registration form before November 17, 2000.

Remember, only the first 20 schools to respond for each site will be eligible to attend. Schools registering for the Martinsburg (November 28) or Morgantown (November 30) workshops will be notified by November 21, 2000. Schools for the remaining sites will be confirmed by November 29, 2000.
