English Literacy/Civics Program Funds Available

CHARLESTON, W.Va. _ The West Virginia Department of Education today announced that applications for the English Literacy/Civics (EL/Civics) Program are available under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act. Eligible providers may apply for grants of up to $10,000.


The purpose of the EL/Civics Program is to provide an integrated program of services that incorporates English literacy and civics education for immigrants and other limited English proficient adults who are not enrolled in school.


Eligible applicants must have demonstrated effectiveness in providing English as a Second Language (ESL) literacy and/or EL/Civics services to adults and may include:  local educational agencies, community-based organizations, volunteer literacy organizations, institutions of higher education, public or nonprofit agencies, libraries, public housing authorities, nonprofit institutions that are not described in any of the items above and consortiums of the agencies, organizations, libraries or authorities described in any of the items above.

                                                                                                                                                  EL/Civics grant applications will be available on March 10, 2008 and must be submitted to the West Virginia Department of Education by April 7, 2008.  The grant award is for one year.
