The Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant will be spread over three years and will fund the county’s Physically Active for Life program. The program’s goal will be to educate students on the value of physical activity over a lifetime, activity skills that support lifetime activity and self-responsibility skills to manage personal fitness goals.
Health screening during the 2005-2006 school year, 14.8 percent of kindergarteners, 19.8 percent of second graders and 23 percent of fifth graders were considered overweight. The Physically Active for Life program hopes to increase the number of students getting 150 minutes a week of physical activity during the school day.
