Duties and Responsibilities

• Will adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 – “Employee Code of Conduct” and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.  
 
Bus Operator Duties (Pursuant to WV State Board of Education Policy 4336)  
• Operates the school bus daily in a safe and efficient manner.  
• Performs pre/post trip inspections.  
• Learns route, including pick up and drop off locations.  
• Uses fire extinguisher safely, as needed.  
• Assists and supervises students with disabilities.  
• Communicates with students, parents, school officials and supervisors.  
• Mops and cleans inside and outside the vehicle.  
• Completes proper paperwork promptly and accurately.  
• Opens all emergency exits.  
• Installs snow chains on a bus, as needed.  
• Raises the hood of a conventional school bus and checks oil levels and antifreeze levels as needed.  
• Reports promptly any accident, unsafe road conditions, or damage to the bus to supervisor immediately.  
• Removes obstructions from windshield and under wiper blades.  
• Adjusts all outside mirrors.  
• Secures a wheelchair and harnesses, if necessary.

• Performs duties efficiently and productively.  
• Maintains and/or upgrades skills.  
• Promotes and maintains positive student-staff-community relations.  
• Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor(s). 
 
Custodian Duties: 
• Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean, and free of litter at all times. 
• Disinfects all water fountains, floors in the restrooms, commodes, urinals, and sinks. 
• Washes all windows, both inside and outside. 
• Performs groundskeeping duties as assigned. 
• Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation. 
• Secures all windows and doors, turns off all lights (except emergency lights), and arms any alarm systems at the end of each day. 
• Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide a temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity. 
• Performs minor maintenance repairs. Reports any major repairs to immediate supervisor. 
• Moves furniture or equipment within the buildings or on campus as required for various activities and as directed by the supervisor. 
• Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance has been required by immediate supervisor. The custodian is responsible for having the building ready for any night activities and any other activities which are regularly held at the school or assigned department. 
• Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair. 
• Performs supportive duties such as: 
- Displays Flag (state and country) 
- Flies Flag at half-staff, when authorized 
- Reports safety hazards within building 
- Stores equipment 
- Services carpeted areas 
• Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs immediate supervisor of needs in advance so as not to hinder the continued performance of the assigned duties. 
• As assigned by supervisor, receives soiled laundry items at the Maintenance facility and appropriately cleans, folds or presses them to be returned to the department of origin. 
- Maintains laundry equipment and submits any service/repair orders in a timely manner 
- Returns clean laundry to department within appropriate time frame  
• Maintains confidentiality and unquestionable integrity. 
• Other duties as assigned which will at times be in other campus areas than that of regularly assigned building/department.  
 

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5. 
• Meet the definition of “Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.  
• Hold or qualify for Bus Operator Certification in accordance with WV Code. 
• Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate. 
• Pool Operator Certification (have or willing to acquire).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach overhead and shoulder height, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use interior and exterior rear view mirrors, and use repetitive motions. Possesses ability to sit for long periods of time, as well as the ability to tolerate ill children and clean up from student sickness accidents. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50 pounds (100 pounds vertically for Special Education bus) of materials, children, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.

1. The staff member must meet ASL and/or Braille skill level requirements as delineated in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification. 
2. The staff member must complete all required annual trainings.

7. The staff member is self-motivated and demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments to accomplish high-quality work to meet demanding deadlines. 
8. The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies. 
9. The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge. 
 
 
 
 

Salary

Based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, D Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level. Specific assignment is based upon student needs, enrollment and departmental needs.
