Title of Vacancy Coordinator, English Language Arts, Office of Secondary Learning, Charleston, WVAdministrative Unit Division of Teaching and Learning

8. The staff member demonstrates effective presentation skills.
Duties and Responsibilities The coordinator for English Language Arts 6-12, will provide leadership to teachers of English and language arts, grades 6-12, while working collaboratively with the offices of Early Learning, Special Programs, Instructional Technology, Assessment and Accountability, Research, Federal Programs, and Title I/School Improvement. Additionally, the coordinator will develop and provide professional development and guidance to teachers as they work collaboratively with the Office of Secondary Learning during the design of instructional resources to be placed on both Teach 21 and Learn 21 sites.
1. The coordinator will provide leadership to teachers of English and language arts courses as they incorporate rigorous and relevant learning opportunities relevant to Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives as they relate to the Common Core into their course and content delivery.
2. The coordinator will provide leadership to classroom teachers as they place the recently adopted Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives for English Language Arts into the West Virginia Framework and align all current resources on Teach 21 with the Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives.
3. The coordinator will maintain a focus on the continual upgrading of instructional resources and materials in a variety of formats that best meet the learning needs and interests of students.
4. The coordinator will provide leadership in assisting teachers develop the skills necessary for their students to produce writing in which the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
5. The coordinator will be responsible for maintaining quality literacy resources on the Teach 21 site by maintaining direct contact with the content coordinators in the Office of Secondary Learning.
6. The coordinator will work collaboratively with the Office of Secondary Learning staff, as well as staff from the Offices of Early Learning, Instructional Technology, Special Programs, Title I/School Improvement, and Assessment & Accountability, Research, other divisions within the WVDE and all RESAs to improve student written and oral communication skills, reading comprehension, presentation and productivity skills.
7. The coordinator will work collaboratively with staff in the Office of Instructional Technology and the Office of Special Programs to identify, integrate and align resources.
8. The coordinator will complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of the Office of Secondary Learning.
EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP:
Department of Education staff are employed upon recommendation of the state superintendent of schools and are state employees. No representative or employee of the state is authorized to enter into any employment contract or other agreement. Department staff work under the direction of the state superintendent of schools for the general supervision of the free schools in the state and implementing the policies of the board and other necessary tasks as determined by the state superintendent or his/her designee. Each employee is “at-will” and subject to termination by the state superintendent at any time, with or without notice, cause or compensation.
The employment relationship between the state superintendent and the employee may be terminated by either party. Reasons for termination by the state superintendent include, but are not limited to, immorality, incompetency, cruelty, insubordination, intemperance, willful neglect of duty, unsatisfactory performance, the conviction of a felony or a guilty plea or a plea of no contest to a felony charge, misuse of funds or property, violations of law or policies of the state board, lack of need, or a lack or loss of funding.
Qualifications 1. Master’s Degree and Teaching certification in English, 5-12 or 7-12, with documented success in the public school classroom.
2. Extensive professional development in high yield research-based strategies, differentiated instruction and quality instructional design
3. A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in middle and/or high school English classroom with documented expertise in the delivery of quality instructional design focused on improved student achievement in reading comprehension and written communication in a variety of formats.
4. Demonstrated expertise in the development of quality standards-focused instructional design that is rigorous and relevant and includes research-based instructional strategies necessary for student success in the 21st Century classroom
5. Demonstrated experience with integration of problem solving, collaboration, creativity, innovation, communication, and self-direction within the secondary classroom
6. Demonstrated expertise in webpage design and maintenance
7. Demonstrated expertise in the integration of technology within the English classroom as well as the use of technology in personal productivity and professional development
8. Demonstrated expertise/experience in use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation software and telecommunications
9. Demonstrated leadership skills within the school, the county school system, professional organizations and/or community groups
10. Demonstrated expertise in developing and delivering professional development that meets the needs of adult learners and scientific research relevant to high quality professional development
11. Knowledge of Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives for English Language Arts
12. Strong oral and written communication skills
13. Ability to schedule, organize and perform multiple assignments while working collaboratively with multiple people across the state
14. Exceptional attendance record and excellent work habits
15. Superior communication skills, oral and written, and excellent presentation skills using current technologies
During the interview all applicants must present a portfolio demonstrating the applicant’s excellence in teaching within the required area of certification, as well as documentation of student engagement and learning in the classroom. Selected applicants will be required to demonstrate oral and written communication proficiency through designed activities conducted during the interview session.
