The West Virginia Department of Education now has a Polycom Video Conferencing Unit located in Conference Room #2 off of the Vendeteria.
The process for setting up a Video Conference call is different, depending on the type of call. Please choose one of the following:
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Q. Where is our video conferencing unit?
A. Our Polycom Video Conferencing unit is currently located in Conference Room #2 off of the vendeteria. This unit is portable and can be taken to the Board Room.
Q. How much does a Video Conference meeting cost?
A. WVNET provides the staff and technical support to make it work. This is not a plug-and-play kind of technology. WVNET charges 25 cents ($0.25) per minute per connection. A 30 minute video conference that includes the Department of Education and all 8 RESAs would cost $67.50 (9 connections x $0.25 x 30 = $67.50)
Q. I'm trying to set up a video conference and the person on the other end wants to know what kind of technology we use. What do we have?
A. We use an IP Polycom Unit. WVNET acts as our "bridge" and can connect our IP unit to other IP units or to ISDN units.
Q. What is our IP address?
A. Private IP is 10.76.1.208, our Public IP is 129.71.215.208 Both IP addresses are static.
Q. Who else has video conferencing units?
A. A list is being compiled and is shown below. Please contact Mark Moore if you have additions or corrections to this list.
Q. Who is our contact at WVNET?
A. Bob Lint blint@mail.wvnet.edu (800) 253-1558.
Q. Can we call people outside of the school system?
A. Yes. They will need to provide WVNET with their IP address or their ISDN address. It is normal to have connection difficulites the first time a connection is made. Plan to make a few test calls before the actual meeting.
Q. I heard that RESA I and RESA VIII already have "bridges" and can make the connections at no cost.
A. This is correct, however they use their bridges in the normal course of business. You will have fewer dates and times to pick from to make your call. Also, they do not have a full time staff dedicated to working out the technical details, WVNET does.
Q. If I am making a point-to-point video conference call, that is to say I only want to call from the Department of Education to a singluar RESA, do I need to go through WVNET?
A. Probably not. You will have no technical expertise to fall back on but if the call works on the first try, then you don't need WVNET and there will be no cost.
