ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant was awarded to the WV Department of Commerce. The purpose of the grant is to provide fiber broadband access to un-served and
underserved community anchor institutions (CAIs). There are 1,062 CAIs served by the BTOP grant. Originally, there were 471 schools included in the BTOP grant application. Prior to the
beginning of implementation of BTOP, 265 of those schools ordered fiber broadband service with local RFPs. Those 265 schools are still included in the BTOP grant, but have been changed
to the improved, or router only, status. There were 8 schools that closed prior to the start of BTOP and removed resulting in a total of 463 schools still participating in the BTOP grant.
Six schools have closed since the BTOP grant began implementation and are now listed as Removed. This results in 192 schools that are still receiving fiber and routers from the BTOP grant.
- 471 Schools named in grant application
- 265 Schools used local bid process to upgrade infrastructure (remain on BTOP list to receive routers)
- 8 Schools closed prior to grant approval
- 6 Schools closed after approval (status listed as removed in BTOP documents)
- 192 Schools receiving BTOP fiber and routers

BTOP Map of K12 Schools
Any school that is receiving a new 3945 Cisco router as a part of the BTOP project needs to be aware that these routers are significantly larger than the 2600 series routers currently installed in most schools. This will be an issue if the rack, where the router will be installed is not large enough or does not have enough space remaining to accommodate the new router. The dimensions for the 3945 router are as follows:
5-1/8" Tall (3U)
17-1/4" Wide
18-3/4" Deep
Weight 50lbs.
