Alternative routes in core subject areas:

General Requirements:

In order to enroll in an alternative route to certification for a general education endorsement, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  1. be offered employment in a shortage area by a West Virginia county school district
  2. possess the minimum of a bachelors degree, with a minimum overall 2.5 GPA from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  3. meet the proficiency scores on the Praxis I or qualify for an exemption
  4. meet the proficiency scores on the Praxis II content or qualify for an exemption
  5. complete a West Virginia State Police and FBI background check

Program Requirements:

While alternative preparation program providers determine the specific coursework required in their programs, the following are the minimum requirements for all alternative certification programs for general education:

  1. completion of 18 semester hours of coursework in the areas of student assessment, development and learning, curriculum, classroom management, the use of educational computers and other technology, and special education and diversity; all programs must include three semester hours of instruction in special education and diversity
  2. completion of three phases of training as specified in W. Va. Code §18A-3-1a and WVBE Policy 5100, Approval of Educational Personnel Preparation Programs
