The PSAT is a preliminary SAT and contains the same type of questions. It measures student performance in three areas: critical reading, writing and mathematics. Results for grade 11 students are entered into competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Students receive feedback on their strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. This allows them to focus their preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice. PSAT results identify students who are likely to be successful in AP classes and score a 3 or better on the AP exam.
