Established/Integration of 21st
Century Learning

As
we reviewed the information provided by the Partnership for 21st
Century Learning, it became apparent that we needed to revise Policy 2520.14 Technology
Standards and Objectives. The WVDE staff
and teachers who completed these revisions studied the ISTE Standards and
documents developed by enGuage. WVDE
staff met with representatives of the Metiri Group to develop a deeper
understanding of the skills required in the 21st century
workplace. We contacted others across
the country involved in work relevant to the 21st century
workplace. We contacted others across
the country involved in work relevant to the 21st century “soft
skills.” Our study led to the
development of Policy 2520.14 Learning Skills and Technology Tools Standards
which contains three standards, Information and Communications Skills; Thinking
and Reasoning Skills; and Personal and Workplace Skills. The learning skills and technology tools
objectives for each programmatic level (K-2, 3-4, 5-8 and 9-12) are found under
each standard.
All
instructional designs on the Teach21 website are standards-focused and based on
content, learning skills and technology tool objectives for the identified
grade level. The 21st century
student performance is a result of the triangulation of content, learning
skills and technology tools standards and objectives.
WVDE
staff has reviewed all projects on techSTEPS for alignment to the content,
learning skills and technology tools objectives cited in each project at each
grade level. Students who master all
projects at each grade level will demonstrate mastery of technology integration
skills at the end of Grade 8.
