What you should know about your student's participation

  • West Virginia is part of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
  • Participation in the Pilot Test by all Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium operational test
  • Participation as either a Scientific Sample School and/or a Volunteer School

If your student's school is a Scientific Sample School

  • Scientific sample schools are selected to produce a testing population which mirrors the general population
  • Scientific sample schools comprise 10% of the population
  • Schools will receive extensive training, helpdesk support, and guidance
  • Information generated from the pilot test help to generate the final form of the test, known as the operation test. Thus no results will be provided.

If your student's school is a Volunteer School

  • All schools not included in the scientific sample may participate
  • Participation allows schools and students to experience the online assessment, gaining valuable experience with the testing layout and interact with the items
  • Testing window after scientific sample
  • Information regarding pilot test administration will come from the West Virginia State Department of Education
  • Score reports are not provided

Why should your student participate?

  • Obtain experience with a secure online assessment in a selected and constructed response environment
  • Represent West Virginia in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium's development of the operational test
