READING FIRST Use this link to see upcoming events CURRENT NEWS: Spring Highlights: 1) School level monitoring is occurring in all 42 schools twice in the spring. Monitoring informaiton will provide school recommendations for program improvement and also provide information in planning state technial assistance. 2) Reading First sponsored upcoming meetings include Higher Education Symposium, Non-Funded County meeting, State Leadership Team Meeting and Cadre Explicti Instruction Training. 3) Beginning of Year to Middle of Year Assessment data indicated an overall growth in the number of students benchmarking and a decrease in the number of studetns requiring intensive services. 4) The WV Reading First office is participating in several USDOE reading projects. Those include sustainability, evaluation anlaysis and Reading First/Special Education module. Reading First is a federally funded program under No Child Left Behind to improve reading instruction and ensure that students are reading on grade level by the end of grade three. US Secretary of Education Rodney Paige announced on July 21, 2003 that West Virginia would receive approximately $43.8 million over the next six years to administer the Reading First program. The funds have been granted to eligible counties. Eligible counties have designed reading instruction based on scientific research. Reading First will include assessments, a core reading instructional program and materials, professional development, access to print, management teams, and evaluation. Each Reading First school has a reading mentor teacher (coach) to assist with implementation of the program in the school. Reading First approved counties are: Calhoun, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Hampshire, Hardy, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Preston, Roane, Summers, Tucker, Upshur, Webster, Wetzel and Wirt.
