CFWV Best Practices
CFWV.com Creates Opportunities and Helps Remove Barriers through Mentor Program
By Elizabeth Manuel, <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00141wxOXuQsNurV24G702jvu8ZmMungmXKUnTea0DMHSf73UFX4g9HmkLAE8aQd0Ii5FMoh0Io8L_yAZCiBFDAN2sJ0HT1tzoeILfWa9HkCzU=> West Virginia GEAR UP Regional Coordinator
The College Foundation of West Virginia has helped to open doors for a West Virginia program. West Virginia GEAR UP launched a mentor program that reaches far beyond the classroom walls. Nearly 450 high school students participated in the program this reporting year alone - a number that continues to climb. Currently, the program is implemented in 14 high schools in West Virginia; schools that represent the southern, southwestern and central regions of the state.
The program itself was designed to encourage students to persevere through the challenges of high school, take personal responsibility, improve self-confidence and increase career awareness. With the vast range of resources available through CFWV.com, the web portal has helped diminish barriers and maximize opportunities for students participating in the program.
As with most mentor programs, students discuss important issues such as taking responsibility and the many social challenges facing them today. However, this program has taken it a step further, as they now use CFWV.com as a platform to discuss education beyond high school. Conversations revolve around hands-on activities that allow mentors and students to navigate and explore resources available through the site.
What began as an exploration and career discovery activity has now become so much more thanks to CFWV.com. Discussion centered on higher education has become part of the norm and a college-going culture has been recognized among their groups. Dialogues are now centered on life beyond high school - a life that includes some form of postsecondary education.
CFWV Workshops and Presentations
The College Foundation of West Virginia offers workshops designed to help educators integrate college and career planning activities and utilize CFWV.com's best practices and tools in the K-12 classroom.
During the trainings, West Virginia educators learn how to utilize the free resource, CFWV.com, and to guide students and parents through career and scholastic exploration and financial literacy components associated with attending college. Students and parents can utilize any of the site's many tools to help them as they are preparing for postsecondary education.
To view a list of scheduled trainings, visit CFWV.com and click the "trainings" tab toward the bottom of the home page. If none of the scheduled dates work for you, please email Heather McChesney at <mailto:HMcChesney at hepc.wvnet.edu> HMcChesney at hepc.wvnet.edu to discuss other options.
If you know of a company, organization, or community group that would like to learn more about the College Foundation of West Virginia and other statewide college access and student success initiatives, please contact Heather McChesney at <mailto:HMcChesney at hepc.wvnet.edu> HMcChesney at hepc.wvnet.edu.

WVU Extension Service, State Legislature effort addresses cyber-bullying

Morgantown, WV - West Virginia University Extension Service, in partnership with the West Virginia Legislature, will launch a new educational curriculum and campaign this fall to prevent cyberbullying. The campaign, known as "iRespect," will be introduced to schools throughout the state.
Community members can now vote for their favorite graphic image for the campaign by visiting www.ext.wvu.edu.
The research-based curriculum is being developed by WVU Extension Service 4-H Youth Development specialists. The curriculum will then be tested with youth focus groups throughout the state.
The statistics are startling. According to an Anti-Safe Survey, four out of every ten youths are bullied online each day.
In April 2011, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin signed Senate Bill 213. The bill made it unlawful for a person to harass or abuse another person via a computer, mobile phone, PDA or other electronic communication device.
