Why good school nutrition is important...
Good nutrition is a vital component of children's growth, development and learning. It also plays a significant role in the prevention of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer
and osteoporosis. Eating fresh, healthy food helps kids learn better by improving their concentration and memory, and it helps them maintain a healthy weight.
In a word, smart foods equals smarter kids! The school environment is one of several settings that can influence children's food choices and eating habits. Schools can ensure that the available
food and beverage options are healthy and help youth eat food that meets dietary recommendations for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nonfat or low-fat dairy products.
That's why the West Virginia Office of Child Nutrition never stops thinking about what our kids are eating. And thanks to their dedication to our children's health and nutrition, West Virginia is
leading the way in the fight against childhood obesity and poor eating habits by establishing one of the most progressive school nutrition policies in the nation.
Since July 1, 2008, West Virginia Board of Education Policy 4321.1 has set nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold,
served or delivered in schools. This nationally-recognized policy reflects an integrated approach to ensuring good nutrition for all students, every day, all year long.
The goal of Policy 4321.1 is to ensure that schools offer students the food and beverage choices that will foster learning and promote a lifetime of healthy eating. In short, the comprehensive
guideline is helping schools lay a healthy foundation for our kids' success.
