  • The West Virginia Department of Education is the state administering agency for five United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition programs for children. Programs include the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Summer Food Service Program and the Special Milk Program. These programs assist sponsors to provide healthful, low-cost or free meals and snacks to children and functionally impaired adults in a variety of settings, including public and private schools, child care centers, residential institutions, shelters, family day care homes, summer camps and parks. In addition to providing nutritious meals and snacks, child nutrition programs promote lifelong healthful eating practices by integrating nutrition education, creating healthful learning environments and promoting nutrition in the community.

Child nutrition programs are intended to serve the nutrition needs of all children, regardless of family income. Since the inception of the National School Lunch Act in 1946, Congress has affirmed the importance of sound nutrition to the health and welfare of children. Nutrition programs enhance learning and quality of life.

In West Virginia, the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program provide meals in every public school, as well as private schools and residential institutions. The Child and Adult Care Food Program operates in child care centers and subsidizes meals and snacks in family day care homes, child care centers, and adult day care centers. The Summer Food Service Program provides meals to children throughout the state in agency sponsored summer camp sites. The Special Milk Program provide milk to children in private schools and summer camps.

In addition to meal programs for children and functionally impaired adults, the Department manages Team Nutrition, a USDA nutrition education program. Team Nutrition funds are used to promote school and community environments that foster good nutrition practices for children. Team Nutrition supports training and education experiences for educators, parents, and food service personnel, as well as the development of nutrition education resources.
