Child and Adult Care Food Program


The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federally funded program that provides reimbursement for healthy meals and snacks served to children and adults receiving child care.

Many different facilities may operate the CACFP, sharing a common goal of bringing nutritious meals and snacks to participants. Participation in the program allows the facility to promote positive food attitudes and eating behaviors in children. An understanding of the role of nutrition in children's physical, mental and social health is emphasized.

Examples of eligible institutions include:

  • Child Care Centers
    Licensed or approved public or private non-profit child care centers, Head Start programs and for-profit centers that serve meals to children.
  • Family Day Care Homes
    Facilities that serve meals to children in approved non-residential day care homes.
  • Outside School Hours Programs
    After school and at-risk centers that provide healthy suppers and snacks to children.
  • Homeless Shelters Emergency and homeless shelters that provide residential services to homeless displaced families.
  • Adult Day Care Centers Public or private nonprofit or for-profit adult day care facilities that provide structured, comprehensive services to functionally impaired adult participants and or adults age 60 and older enrolled in a non-residential

What are the Benefits of Sponsoring the CACFP?

  • Federal reimbursement for the breakfasts, lunches, suppers, and snacks served to enrolled children;
  • Commodity (donated) foods or cash in lieu of commodities;
  • Technical assistance for program administration, management, and recordkeeping; and
  • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) resources.

How can you apply to become a sponsor?

To apply to be a new sponsor of the CACFP, applicants must contact the West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Child Nutrition at 304-558-3396.
