Over 500 School System Leadership Team Members will gather at the Charleston Civic Center on January 25-27 to explore practices of high performing school systems. This conference, the third in a series of five, will focus on high yield instructional practices and will include a salute to West Virginia teachers. All 55 county “Teachers of the Year” will be invited to the conference to participate in recognition activities and conference professional development.
Including presentations by outstanding practitioners and consultants, the conference is designed to expand team members’ knowledge of high yield instructional practices. In-depth clinic sessions on such topics as differentiated instruction, Understanding by Design, standards-based mathematics instruction, acceleration, research-based high yield instructional strategies, expanding time through scheduling practices, classroom climate/high expectations, and strategic planning will be offered during the conference.
Prominent in the conference program are three nationally known consultants who will deliver keynote addresses. Dr. James Sweeney will open the conference with an address on developing teacher efficacy. Former superintendent of Sacramento Public Schools, Sweeney is known for his passion for the teaching profession and his on-going desire to exalt the teaching profession. He will be followed by ASCD author, John Brown, noted authority on engaging instruction and author of Making the Most of Understanding by Design. The conference will close with the inspiring story of teacher, Erin Gruwell, whose message underscores the power of the classroom teacher to change the lives of students. Ms. Gruwell’s story has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show and will soon be a major motion picture produced by Miramax.
School System Improvement Team Members should register on line to confirm their attendance. RESA representatives, Department of Education staff, OEPA staff and higher education participants should also complete on-line registration.
