The nutrition symposium’s theme for this year is “Nutrition…The Next Generation III – Taking Action.” The event will focus on children’s nutrition and physical activity issues as related to the rise in obesity among children. The symposium hopes to encourage grassroots efforts to improve the nutrition and physical activity environment for West Virginia children.
The symposium will feature keynote speakers including national experts and state and local leaders in the nutrition field. Speakers will include Leslie Bonci, NPH, RD, Director of Sports Nutrition for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; Jacquelyn Sowers, National Consultant for Health Promotion and Education; Bane McCracken, Coordinator, West Virginia Department of Education Office of Student Services and Health Promotion; and former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris.
“Obesity is the number one health problem facing West Virginia today,” said Pam Hamilton, MS, RD, Director for the West Virginia Child Nutrition Center. “This third symposium is unique in bringing a diverse group of advocates together in an effort to build healthy tomorrows for our state. It is imperative that West Virginia communities discover the tools needed to foster an environment that will promote the health and well-being of our children.”
Other sponsoring agencies include the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council Mid East, W.Va., West Virginia Women Infants and Children Program and the American Cancer Society.
