Motorists Urged To Drive with Caution

Posted: August 25, 2003
Charleston, W.Va. – With schools across the state scheduled to open Tuesday,August 26, 2003, the West Virginia Department of Education would like to remind motorists to be especially careful.

“We ask motorists to be extremely cautious and to be aware that buses will be loading and unloading students,” said WVDE School Transportation Director Wayne Clutter. “School buses transport West Virginia’s most precious cargo – our children.”

West Virginia state law requires motorists to stop when buses are loading andunloading students.

“Statistics compiled by the Kansas Department of Education, indicate that most injuries and fatalities occur at the bus stop,” said Clutter. “Parents should instruct their children to stay off the roadway and to avoid horseplay at the bus stop. This can reduce students being exposed to danger. Ultimately though, it is up to all of us – parents, students, bus operators, motorists, and school administrators – to provide a safe ride for our children.”
