WVDE Hosts Fifth Annual Elementary Math Academy

Posted: August 04, 2003
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The 2003 Annual Elementary Math Academy was kicked off Sunday, August 3, at the Charleston Marriott. Approximately 150 teachers from across West Virginia are participating in the weeklong professional development event.

Educators enrolled in the academy will work with trainers who will introduce them to researched-based strategies and materials to more effectively teach mathematics at the elementary grade level. The trainers will guide the participants on how to implement these strategies in their lesson plans.

“No Child Left Behind was fully implemented last school year and this academy will help educators understand the new mandates in mathematics,” said Terri Hammond, Coordinator of Title I Mathematics. “With West Virginia Achieves, our state’s No Child Left Behind plan, in full implementation this is the perfect time to provide educators with these strategies and materials.”

This is the fifth year for the academy, which runs through Friday, August 8. For more information regarding the academy, please contact Terri Hammond at (304) 558-7817.
