WVDE’s Leadership Conference Slated for July 22-24

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The West Virginia Department of Education will host the Leadership Conference in Charleston, July 22-24, at the Charleston Civic Center.
Educators within this year’s target audience – Technical and Adult Educators, School and School System Leaders and County Technology Leaders – will be exploring their specific roles in ensuring all children in West Virginia receive a top quality education based on the state’s content standards, which are aligned with state’s assessment program.
Technical and Adult Educators will learn about the Content Standards and Objectives for their fields of study. School and School System Leaders will learn how they can provide assistance and support to classroom teachers. They also will be introduced to the professional development modules currently being developed for use with all West Virginia teachers during professional development days in August. County Technology Leaders will explore the role of technology as it assists teachers and administrators in the delivery and assessment of a quality education.
The conference will open with a general session at the Charleston Civic Center on July 22 at 10 a.m. when State Schools Superintendent David Stewart will deliver his annual State of the Schools Address. Former Governor Gaston Caperton will present the Caperton Technology Awards following Dr. Stewart’s address.
The second general session will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23 in the auditorium of the Clay Center. Dr. Rick Rigsley will be the featured speaker. Rigsley, CEO of Impact World Group, will speak on issues of character, teamwork, excellence, leadership and effective communication. A tour of the Clay Center will follow Dr. Rigsley’s address.
The third general session is scheduled for Thursday, July 24, at 8:30 a.m. at the Charleston Civic Center. Dr. Max Thompson will be the featured speaker. His topic will be "Closing the Achievement Gap."
Pre-registration rate is $50, which includes lunch on Wednesday, all hospitalities, breaks and the tour and reception at the Clay Center. Pre-registration deadline is June 1, 2003. Participants may also register at the conference for $60.
