In addition to the applications, the site includes information about each of the academies, including photographs from July 2001 and comments from some of the alumni. Designed by Jeffrey Zemerick, a senior at Oak Hill High School in Fayette County, the website is user-friendly and can be navigated easily.
ďUsing technology has been a major thrust in West Virginia schools, and the internet is an excellent venue for disseminating information,Ē Sherry Keffer, state coordinator of Governorís Schools and gifted education, said. ďLast year, when we changed the delivery system for applications, the reception from students was great. For many years, there had been complaints that students did not receive information, especially about the Schools for the Arts. School personnel tended to think that the number of applicants per school was limited, giving the application to only a few students. By advertising the site, we made awareness of the opportunity much more widespread.Ē
Anyone interested in applying for these academies can download the application or ask his/her school counselor for one. While the application is available on-line, it will be submitted the traditional way, via U.S. mail, because of the number of original signatures and transcripts required.
School personnel are encouraged to allow time for use of school computers and printers for those students not having Internet access at home.
Keffer also noted the dates that the various application are in the West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Special Education, in Charleston. Faculty applications for both academies are due no later than Nov. 28; Governorís School for the Arts student applications by Dec. 15; Residential Directors and Residential Assistants applications for both academies by Jan. 12, and the Governorís Honors Academy applications by Feb. 15.
All applicants, except those for the Governorís Honors Academy, are to be sent by the applicant. Applications and selections for the Honors Academy are to be submitted by the county superintendent.
