Life Skills Training for 8th Grade Teachers Available

April 04, 2001

The Life Skills Training (LST) schedule for 2001 is here. The 2001-2002 school year will mark the final phase of the three-year training and implementation project to put LST in every sixth, seventh, and eighth grade class in West Virginia.

We would like to thank principals and teachers who have supported and delivered the research proven curriculum during the past two years.

We invite eight grade teachers to attend the training this summer. Principals will select the teacher(s) who will be implementing Life Skills Training in the health education classes at the eight-grade level. If justification is made, the program may be implemented in Developmental Guidance, Advisor-Advisee, or Exploratory Units; however, health education is the preferred area for implementing the Life Skills Training curriculum.

To encourage participation in this program, the WVDE will fund the following for each teacher:

* A $300 stipend * Curriculum materials * Travel reimbursement * Meals * Lodging for one night (for individuals living more than 30 miles from the training site)

The Department of Education will order and fund the purchase of all student workbooks and updated teacher resources for grades 6, 7, and 8 for the 2001-2002 school year.

Teachers in grades 6 or 7 who have not received training or 8th grade teachers who are unable to attend the summer events, but could be implementing LST in these grades this coming school year, please notify our office with this information on the enclosed form. We will be offering a make-up training for those teachers this fall.

All participants will receive confirmation and detailed information about the workshop after the registration form is received by the WVDE. The office of Healthy Schools must receive completed registration forms no later than April 24, 2001.

If you have any questions, please call the Office of Healthy Schools at 558-8830 or your County Safe and Drug Free Schools Coordinator.
