The West Virginia Department of Education Offers Alert Services for Inclement Weather

Posted: October 16, 2012

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Information about school delays and closings is at your fingertips. The West Virginia Department of Education is reminding parents and students to sign up for online and mobile notification services as we slide into the winter months.

The WVDE posts the most up-to-date information on its website http://wvde.state.wv.us/closings/. However, you can also receive cancellations and announcements through email and text alerts, via RSS, or by following @WVSnowDay on Twitter.

“The WVDE now utilizes multiple tools to keep parents informed and ultimately assure student safety,” said West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Jorea Marple. “During the winter months, inclement weather can result in unexpected changes in school operations and schedules. It is again that time of year to prepare for possible school closings, delays, and early dismissals.”

The WVDE encourages the use of mobile text messages as an option to receive emergency communications. To sign up, click on the School Closing button on the Department’s main website http://wvde.state.wv.us. Anyone with mobile service can sign up for text alerts by providing their cell phone number as well as their cell service carrier and following the instructions.

For more information or help signing up for alert services, contact the Office of Communication at 304-558-2699.
