First Lady Announces New Military Service Initiative

May 04, 2011

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - First lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin on Monday announced the launch of a new military service initiative, “Serve West Virginia Military: Serving Those Who Serve Us.” The launch is in conjunction with first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden’s national “Joining Forces” initiative. The effort is designed to engage grass roots and community groups to play an active role in supporting and providing assistance to West Virginia’s deployed service men and women, their spouses, children, active stateside military and veterans.

“Giving back to the men and women who continually make sacrifices to ensure our nation’s freedom is rewarding and uplifting,” First Lady Tomblin said. “There are so many simple things individuals and communities can do to serve military families and veterans within our state. This initiative will encourage ongoing service to military families and veterans and provide participants with ways to share their experiences and offer suggestions for others to get involved.”

Each month, first lady Tomblin will announce a new mission on the “Serve West Virginia Military” website with suggestions and ideas that individuals or groups can develop to lend support to all branches of the military, their families and veterans. Businesses, not-for-profits, faith-based groups, schoolchildren of all ages and all community organizations are encouraged to join in the monthly mission to “Serve Those Who Serve Us."
