CHARLESTON, W.Va. – During its May board meeting, the West Virginia Board of Education approved the Common Core State Standards for English, social studies, science and mathematics. The West Virginia Department of Education will spend the next year aligning the common core with West Virginia’s 21st Century Curriculum Standards and Objectives and resources. It is expected that the new standards will be implemented across the public school system in the fall of 2011.
The common core standards focus on fewer concepts while stressing deeper learning and understanding, and are part of an overall drive to better prepare today's students for college or careers. The goal is to provide states with fewer, clearer and higher standards that are to be benchmarked against international standards.
The West Virginia Board of Education also placed two proposed policy updates on public comment for 30 days.
Board members approved revisions to Policy 2422.7, Standards for Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedures. The manual updates address health care procedures during curricular and co-curricular activities.
The board also is seeking public comment on amendments to the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission – Series 2, Athletics, Provisions Governing Eligibility and Series 3, Provisions Governing Contests. The changes affect band and athletic programs and clarify the length of quarters for middle school and ninth grade teams.
Educators, parents and community members are encouraged to review the proposed changes and make suggestions. The policies can be viewed on the West Virginia Department of Education Web site at http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies.
