West Virginia Board of Education Seeks Public Input
Posted: February 21, 2008
Charleston, W.Va. _ The West Virginia Board of Education is seeking comment on alterations made to its attendance policy. Board members voted at their February meeting to place Policy 4110: Attendance on public comment for 30 days.
This policy incorporates requirements of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which is the primary piece of federal legislation dealing with the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness in U.S. public schools.
The changes clarify the definition of awaiting foster care placement to ensure that the educational needs of children in interim social service placements are met.
The West Virginia Department of Education is committed to ensuring that all West Virginia children and youth experiencing homelessness have the opportunity to attend, enroll in, and succeed in school.
Educators, parents and community members are encouraged to review the policy and make suggestions. The policy can be viewed and comments can be submitted by logging onto the West Virginia Department of Education Web site at http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies .
