Donna Wilkes, a culinary arts instructor at the Putnam County Vocational Technical Center, has been named as the 2000 West Virginia ProStart Teacher of the Year.
Wilkes was selected by the staff of the Office of Hospitality Education and Training, West Virginia Department of Education.
“Donna Wilkes was one of the founding ProStart teachers three years ago,” said Gene Coulson, director of the Office of Hospitality Education and Training. “Through her dedication to students and commitment to the food services industry, Mrs. Wilkes exemplifies what all ProStart teachers should strive to be. She also trains new teachers in the ProStart program.”
According to Coulson, the ProStart program was begun in 1997 to promote careers in restaurant management to West Virginia students.
“Developed and supported by the National Restaurant Association, the ProStart program’s curriculum teaches young people the basics of food preparation as well as restaurant management and operations,” Coulson said. “There are numerous management opportunities in this field in West Virginia that offer a good salary.”
For being selected as West Virginia’s ProStart Teacher of the Year, Wilkes will be recognized by the National Restaurant Association at a “Salute to Excellence” Forum at the association’s National Conference in Chicago this May.
