Applications Available For Students Leading The Change Team Nutrition Grants

December 27, 2005

Charleston, W.Va. - Students can use their voices to promote healthful changes in their school environments. With Students Leading the Change, a project that empowers students to advocate and educate other students on healthy lifestyles, 13 team nutrition grants in the amount of $6,500 will be made available to high schools for the 2006-2007 school-year.

County nutrition directors are encouraged to submit applications for the Students Leading the Change grants for up to two high schools that meet certain criteria including the commitment to the Team Nutrition goal of improving childrenís life-long eating and physical activity habits and the development of the grant activities based on a school assessment using the HealthierUS recognition criteria and participate in the HealthierUS challenge.

Student Health Action Councils will be composed of high school students and student advisors who will make a commitment to organize locally and attend a statewide leadership conference, develop plans that promote nutrition and school environment integrity, and collaborate with other student and community organizations to accomplish goals. These groups will also collaborate with the Governorís Healthy Lifestyle Office and will serve as mentors to extend efforts in after-school programs and share success through presentation to other schools and local policy-makers.
