West Virginia Board of Education Recognizes 127 Exemplary Accreditation Status Schools Posted: October 12, 2005 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State Board of Education officials today proclaimed 127 schools in 38 counties as “Exemplary Schools.” Kenna Seal, Director of the Office of Education Performance Audits, remarked that an extraordinary number of schools achieved the exemplary distinction this year. State Board members applauded the performance of these schools.
State Board President Dr. Lowell Johnson attributed the schools’ honor as indicative that “staff, parents, students, and communities are working hard to achieve excellence.” Johnson further noted, “this accomplishment speaks highly for the quality of education throughout West Virginia, with schools from every area of our state identified as exemplary.” Seal explained that schools must meet a set of rigorous standards to achieve exemplary accreditation status. 1. At least 80 percent of the school’s students score at or above mastery in the All Students (AS) subgroup in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and the school achieves AYP in each subgroup. 2. At least 30 percent of all students score above mastery or distinguished in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. 3. An attendance rate at or above 94 percent. 4. A graduation rate at or above 85 percent. According to Seal, a special recognition ceremony will be held to honor these 127 schools. “It is encouraging to note the diverse school representation: schools of various sizes, both low enrollment and high enrollment; rural and urban schools; Title I schools and nonTitle I schools, and schools of various configurations,” said Seal. “We have high expectations for all schools in West Virginia, and these schools have achieved the State Board’s highest level of recognition.” The following schools are recognized as Exemplary Accreditation status schools.
