National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Board Certification Salary Supplement for

West Virginia Educators

The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) recognizes, appreciates and encourages those meeting the needs of West Virginia learners in an instructional capacity within our public schools. One effort to demonstrate the value of these teachers is the awarding of a state salary supplement to teachers holding board certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In addition, the recognition of NBPTS certification on the West Virginia professional teaching certificate provides an avenue for West Virginia and the teacher to verify that the teacher meets the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) highly qualified teacher status.

NBPTS Salary Supplement Requirements:

The West Virginia State Board of Education adopted the following requirements for the awarding of the NBPTS board certification salary supplement:

  • Verification of NBPTS board certification:
    • The NBCT will need to submit an application Form 12 to obtain the salary supplement
    • The NBCT will need to submit a copy of the letter received from NBPTS that verifies his/her status as NBCT

NBPTS Salary Supplement Validity Period:

The salary supplement is valid for up to the ten (10) years that the NBPTS certification is valid, as long as the applicant is employed as a classroom teacher in the West Virginia public schools. To receive the state salary supplement, application must be made within three (3) months after the board certification has been awarded.
