Communication

The twenty-first century teacher is faced with monumental changes in regard to effectively communicating with students, parents and other colleagues.  Research has pointed to the value of instructional techniques which require the instructor to become a facilitator of learning, rather than the keeper of all knowledge.  Teachers must communicate with the digital natives utilizing methods which appeal to their individual mode of learning.  “In order
to bridge the digital divide in education, Ian Jukes suggests, that teachers must learn to communicate in the native language and style of their students.”

The novice teacher may ask the mentor teacher for assistance in developing and implementing twenty-first century communication techniques.  This section of the digital resource provides examples of communication strategies to engage the twenty-first century learner and educator, i.e. wikis, blogs, online calendars, and email.  Step-by-step guides are also provided to assist teachers in creating their own communication strategies.
