The person employed for this position must be a certified, highly-qualified, [minimum] master’s-level professional counselor, grades PK-AD. This individual will address the developmental needs of all students in the areas of academic, career, personal and social while at the same time, work collaboratively with educators, families, and the community. The school counselor will follow the West Virginia Department of Education Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Policy, which includes the following four components: school counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support. The majority of the school counselor's duties will be direct services to students, imparting specific skills and learning opportunities in a proactive manner. School counselors will collaborate with the education teams, advocate improving student achievement and other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
In addition to the above, other duties may include, but not limited to the following:
• Provide individual and group counseling
• Being a part of the crisis team and providing crisis counseling
• Assist with the writing and implementation of behavioral plans
• Assist with prevention and character education programs
• Assist with building wide testing procedures
• Other duties as assigned
