Educational Sign Language Interpreter I - II

Description
Educational Sign Language Interpreter I/II:  
The person employed for this position will  
provide communication access across all  
educational environments to students who  
are deaf or hard of hearing, and will hold  
the Initial/Permanent Paraprofessional  
Certificate. 
 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Educational Sign Language Interpreter I/II: 
• Render communication faithfully,  
always convey the content and spirit of  
the speaker, use language most readily  
understood by the student served. 
• Function as an extension of  
classroom teacher in student’s  
educational program. 
• May be required to interpret directly  
from taught materials or be asked to do  
re-teaching as an instructional aide in one  
on one setting that is teacher directed. 
• Shall maintain information about the  
student(s) in a confidential manner. 
• May be required to accompany  
children to therapy sessions, playground,  
bus duty and other activities. 
• May be required to do daily hearing  
aid checks and additional special record  
keeping. 
• May be required to work one on one  
with students and implement teacher  
plans with regards to instruction, toileting  
skills, and feeding activities. 
• Required to give attention to the  
safety of the children and perform any  
other duties assigned by supervision. 
 
 
In addition, the interpreter will assist as  
deemed necessary: 
• The teacher as needed with planning,  
preparation, and distribution of classroom  
materials. 
• Conduct learning activities with  
student according to established  
procedures. 
• Maintains regular attendance and  
complies with the Employee Code of  
Conduct. 
• Maintains an environment that is safe  
for students and conducive to learning. 
• Provide individualized instruction to  
reinforce skills that have been taught by  
the teacher. 
• Assist in implementing lessons based  
on district and school objectives and to  
address students’ learning needs. 
• Assist with supervision of student  
passengers on buses and maintain a safe  
traveling environment (If Applicable). 
• Attend in-services and workshops as  
directed. 
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to  
FERPA Regulations. 
• Assist the teacher in supervision of  
children in the classroom and in various  
locations in the school including, but not  
limited to, instructional areas, cafeteria,  
playground and bus. 
• Ability to effectively present  
information and respond to questions from  
administrators, students, staff and the  
general public consistent with the duties  
of this position. 
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and  
divide in all units of measure consistent  
with the duties of this position. 
• Ability to apply concepts such as  
fractions, percentages, ratios, and  
proportions to practical situations  
consistent with the duties of this position. 
• Ability to interface effectively with  
other departments, school personnel,  
maintenance staff and business contacts  
outside of Upshur County Schools. 
• Ability to interact appropriately with  
children and ability to work with adults. 
• Ability to demonstrate patience while  
working with children. 
• Ability to learn new skills; flexibility  
and willingness to perform a variety of  
tasks. 
• Ability to work well with others, follow  
written and oral directions and complete  
assignments given. 
• Ability to solve practical problems and  
deal with a variety of concrete variables in  
situations where only limited  
standardization exists consistent with the  
duties of this position. 
• Ability to interpret a variety of  
instructions whether furnished in written,  
oral, diagram, or schedule form consistent  
with the duties of this position. 
• Ability to accurately perform assigned  
tasks. 
• Ability to perform duties in a full  
compliance with county requirements and  
Board Policies. 
• Oral and written communication skills  
consistent with the duties of this position. 
• Interpersonal relationship skills  
consistent with the duties of this position. 
• Other duties and responsibilities  
assigned by the principal and/or  
immediate supervisor. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
High School diploma or equivalent,  
pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; Criminal  
background check conducted pursuant to  
WV Code §18-5-15c; Meet the definition  
of “Qualifications” in WV Code §18A-4- 
8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant  
to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved  
competency test) as required. 
 
To perform this job successfully, an  
individual must be able to perform each  
essential duty satisfactorily. The  
requirements listed below are  
representative of the knowledge, skill,  
and/or ability required.  
• Must have completed the EIPA  
requirements and endorsement as  
Educational Sign Language Interpreter I or  
Educational Sign Language Interpreter II. 
• Must have documented experience  
working effectively in concert with a  
variety of professionals in an educational  
setting. 
• Must have history of satisfactory  
employment as related to attendance,  
punctuality, and ability to work with  
others. 
• Must be a self-directed individual. 
• Combine signs, finger spelling, and  
gestures to convey language. Signing  
exact English is the method required,  
using English syntax and structure. 
• When signing is used, interpreter will  
use Total Communication, including both  
sign and mouth movements. 
• Will present spoken material to aid  
oral students through clear, audible  
representation, which is easy to lip read. 
• Shall be skilled in one to one and  
group conversational skills. 
• Have training and experience in  
working with developmentally delayed  
children.
