Ms. Karen Jackson
Dear Ms. Jackson:
You have asked:
If our senate needs information or wishes to make a
recommendation to the local superintendent, local board of education,
or to someone at the state level, may we choose someone from the group
to represent us in writing letters or making phone calls or must we go
through the principal?
A faculty senate chooses its own chair, vice chair and secretary according to the enclosed W.Va. Code 18-5A-5(a). Any of these or someone else chosen by a faculty senate as its agent can speak for it. The principal's role in the faculty senate is simply to call its organizational meeting at the beginning of each year. [See again /18-5A-5(a).] Enclosed with Code 18-5A-5 is the remainder of Article 5, Chapter 18 together with /18A-3-8, plus /18A-2-9, so that you will be able to compare the responsibilities of a faculty senate with those of a principal, local school improvement council, school curriculum team and the county staff development council. Hoping that I have been of service, I am, Sincerely, /s/
Henry Marockie
