Michael L. Shaffer
ABE/GED Instructor, Central Regional Jail

     Mike has been an Adult Basic Education and GED instructor for The West Virginia Department of Education nearly 6 years. In his time of employment with The Department of Education, he has developed a Destinations curriculum to match the West Virginia Department of Education’s content standards, formed a relationship with the local Work for West Virginia job training skills program allowing his students to participate in further education and training upon release, created a survey given to all inmates within the West Virginia Regional Jail Correctional facilities system to determine possible educational needs, served on the State Department’s Handbook revision committee and Website development committee.

     Mike is a graduate of Glenville State College with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Safety Education. He was selected as the Ratliff Award winner at Glenville for being the outstanding Physical Education major in 1994. He is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Adult Education with Marshall University in Huntington, WV.

     Mike enjoys being involved in community activities by serving as PTA president for his children’s school, coaching youth wrestling, baseball and coordinating a J.A.K.E.S. (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship) event serving 150 children annually. Last year’s J.A.K.E.S. event was recognized by the National Wild Turkey Federation as being the best in its class of all events held within the US.
