ABE Teacher of the Year

Martha Jane “Janie” Givens
Mt. Olive Correctional Complex

Jane was born and raised in Wheeling, West Virginia, and educated in Ohio County schools.  She attended West Virginia University and completed her BA in elementary education at West Liberty State College.  She completed her MA in reading in 1969 at WVU and an MA in  special education—educable mentally impaired—in 1972 at the College of Graduate Studies.  She has taught second and third grades and special education in Ohio, Marshall, and Kanawha Counties for 30+ years.
Her dream job has been working with special education students at Mt. Olive Correctional Complex for 3 ½ years.  She loves the challenge of teaching men to read and do basic math and is impressed by the educational dedication of those men who may never leave maximum security.  She feels working at MOCC is a wonderful ending to her education career.
