A Success School is -

A school that has met its West Virginia Accountability Index (WVAI) target AND demonstrates that a majority of its subgroups are making sufficient academic progress against proficiency-based Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) success school image

How are Success schools identified?

Success schools are identified using the following process:

  • A WVAI score is calculated for each school and compared to each school's unique WVAI target.
  • Each school's valid subgroup (20 or more members) proficiency-based AMO is then calculated and measured against its unique subgroup proficiency-based AMO target.
  • Prior to Success School identification, all identified Priority and Focus schools are removed from the statewide list of schools.
  • Each school that meets or exceeds its WVAI target AND meets or exceeds a majority of its subgroup proficiency-based AMO targets will be identified as a Success school.

What are the expectations for a Success school?

A Success school will be provided flexibility based on the understanding that successful continuous improvement is occurring and no intervention or supplemental improvement support is needed. Success schools will:

  • Complete a basic Strategic Plan.
  • Be exempt from ESEA monitoring for one complete monitoring cycle.
  • Be reviewed for Reward school distinction.

How are Success Schools reviewed for Reward school designation?

A Success school that is ranked among the highest 10% of schools for growth, without significant achievement gaps, will be designated as a High Progress Reward School.

A Success school that is ranked among the highest 10% of schools for Math and English/Language Arts achievement, without significant achievement gaps, will be designated as a High Performing Reward School.

Reward schools will be recognized by the West Virginia Board of Education for their exemplary efforts. Specific recognitions will include:

  • Representation on state level committees.
  • Opportunities to showcase successful strategies through state and regional presentations.
  • Participation in a formal annual recognition ceremony.

How long is a school designated as a Success school?

The unique school WVAI and subgroup proficiency-based AMO targets increase each year. Therefore, a school's designation is determined on an annual basis after certification of the statewide assessment results. Success schools will be required to continually improve their subgroup-specific and WVAI performance annually to maintain this designation.
