This is one of a series of courses to be designed for the identification and submission of resources to be reviewed for inclusion on the WVDE Learn 21 Web site. This course is specific to the identification and submission of Learn 21 STEM resources for grades 3-8 and/or 9-12.The course consists of six sessions plus an Orientation during which participants actively explore and identify engaging, student-centered STEM resources that promote high-quality learning of content. By the end of this course, participants will initiate and successfully complete the identification, review and submission process for STEM resources with a combined emphasis upon science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
This is an introductory course for teachers, technology specialists, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other school personnel who are certified to teach grades k-8 multi-subjects or grades 6-8 math, science or engineering. Participants are expected to have regular access to computers. Although not a requirement, high speed Internet access definitely enhances the online experience. Participants should be proficient with using email, browsing the Internet, and navigating through computer files. Access to Microsoft Office is recommended. Participants who do not have access to Microsoft Office should download Open Office documents (a free download from Microsoft) for the purpose of reading and sending documents throughout this course.
This workshop will enable participants to:
Identify, review and submit STEM resources through the WVDE Learn 21 approval process.
Utilize STEM resources for classroom instruction
Assessment and Course Requirements
Each session of this course includes readings, activities, discussion topics which participants are required to complete. High-quality, active participation in the online discussions is vital to the understanding and completion of the course. Additionally, participants will identify, review and submit 2-4 online STEM resources for each of the six course content sessions. Resources will be reviewed and submitted via an online resource review form. Weekly submissions of individual resources will be reviewed by a Technology Integration Specialist, the WVDE eLearning Coordinator and a content specialist. Feedback will be provided for all STEM resources submitted for Learn 21 approval. Participants are expected spend three (3) hours completing the course Orientation and then seven (7) hours per week in each of the six content sessions. Participants are required to complete an initial course survey during the course Orientation and a final course survey during Session Six. All participants will be prompted to review and then indicate that they understand the WVDE eLearning for Educators Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) posted at http://wvde.state.wv.us/elearning/docs/WVLearns_participant_memorandum_of_understanding.pdf.
The products for this course are the collections of STEM resource review forms submitted to WVDE for possible inclusion on the Learn 21 website. Participants will submit the following resources:
Session One: STEM resources with a math focus and one additional STEM area of focus:
Math + Engineering
Session Two: STEM resources with a science focus and one additional STEM area of focus:
Science + Math
Science + Engineering
Session Three: STEM resources with a technology focus and one additional STEM area of focus:
Technology + Math
Technology + Engineering
Session Four: STEM resources with an engineering focus and one additional STEM area of focus:
Engineering + Math
Session Five: STEM resources with the focus on Science and Technology and Engineering and Math.
Session Six: STEM resources are to be identiief for a Learn 21 landing pages:
Learn 21 Grades 1-2, 3-5 or 6-8 Landing Page:
The following items are required for the grades 1-2 or grades 3-5 landing page:
1. A video featuring STEM initiatives/activities appropriate for students.
2. A web link to STEM activities that would be appropriate for students and feature many pages of robust activities and information.
3. A "poll" question with 4 short response choices related to STEM and appropriate for students.
Participants will be evaluated on the frequency and quality of their discussion board participation. Participants are required to post a minimum of three substantial postings each session, including one that begins a new thread and two that respond to existing threads. Postings that begin new threads will be reviewed based on their relevance, demonstrated understanding of course concepts, examples cited, and overall quality. Postings that respond to other participants will be evaluated on relevance and the degree to which they extend the discussion. Participants are to read all original messages by course colleagues and enough additional responses to make a total of 50% of the messages posted for that session.
Sessions One-Six will be devoted to locating and reviewing the best STEM resources on the web for students in grades 9-12. Two readings will be provided as the initial introduction for each session. There will be an abundant number of activities each week. All activities will be designed to assist participants with the Learn 21 review process (i.e. links to the WVDE CSOs as well as previously approved Learn 21 resources; example of approved/not approved Learn 21 resources; steps for the Learn 21 review and submission process.) The discussion forum for this course is a bit different from other WVDE eLearning courses. Participants will be responding to one course colleague each week and reading all discussion posts and threads. The format for Session Two through Session Six will closely follow the Session One format. Each session will feature two readings, examples of accepted/not-accepted Learn 21 resources and instructions for reviewing and submitting resources.
Session One:Identify, review and submit resources and have one or two STEM (emphasis on Math and one additional content area (technology, engineering, and science) accepted for the Learn 21 web site.
Session Two:Identify, review and submit resources and have one or two STEM (emphasis on Science and one additional content area (technology, engineering, and math) accepted for the Learn 21 web site.
Session Three:Identify, review and submit resources and have one or two STEM (emphasis on Technology and one additional content area (science, engineering, and math) accepted for the Learn 21 web site.
Session Four:Identify, review and submit resources and have one or two STEM (emphasis on Engineering and one additional content area (science, math, and technology) accepted for the Learn 21 web site.
