Course Goals:
Session #1
Participants will:
1. become aware of personal bias,
2. realize the necessity of putting aside judgments about families and cultures, and
3. be able to identify a common ground and differences between their and the families personal perspective.
Session #2
Participants will:
1. share positive and specific information about the child with the family,
2. recognize the child’s interests, skills, and abilities, and
3. use clear and objective descriptions of the child’s behavior and accomplishments.
Session #3
Participants will:
1. develop strategies on how to obtain and then reflect upon information gathered from parents,
2. become aware of the effect socioeconomics have on students within the educational environment, and
3. be able to conduct an interview and gather information.
Session #4
Participants will:
1. share what you learned about the child from your observations of family-child interactions,
2. acknowledge what you learn about the family-child relationship from observations and discussions, and
3. help identify and promote community activities that support family well-being.
Session #5
Participants will:
1. share what has been learned about the child from observations of family-child interactions,
2. acknowledge what has been learned about the family-child relationship from observations and discussions, and
3. help identify and promote community activities that support family well-being.
Session #6
Participants will:
1. identify strategies and resources to strengthen the family’s ability to be lifelong educators for their child,
2. be aware and respectful of the diverse nature of families,
3. be able to gather resources based on parent/family needs, and
4. understand the benefits and process of creating a parent workshop.
