West Virginia schools have been called among the safest in the nation. In a continuing effort, the West Virginia Board of Education and the West Virginia Department of Education recognize the need of students, teachers, administrators and other school personnel to have an orderly, safe and stimulating educational environment. Promoting a safe learning environment requires a comprehensive program supported by everyone in the school organization, as well as parents or guardians in the community.

The West Virginia Department of Education is sponsoring the Safe Schools Conference to provide assistance to local school districts and schools in the development of their individual plans for responding to school violence. The conference sessions will present multiple interventions that should be part of a school wide program. School prevention and intervention programs will address the factors that put young people at risk of violence as well as protect the factors that foster resiliency. Often a slight change in direction will create a sea of change in school safety.

The Safe Schools Conference Announcement includes a conference registration form. Please feel free to make duplicate copies of the announcement and registration form and share it with others interested in this important topic. Invited speakers are Louis Martinez, Principal, "Character Counts;" Dr. Jane Hammond, Superintendent of Jefferson County, Colorado; Lee Bason, "Capturing the Hearts of Kids;" Jason Dorsey, "Students Perspective on Ending School Violence;" and Dr. David Clayman, Psychologist, "Everybody's a Geek to Someone Else."
